ABOUT ME

Kia ora,

I’m Steve Unwin — a Director of Photography based in New Zealand, working across documentary, feature film, television, and commercial productions for local and international production companies.

I work as a DOP, self-shooting producer/director, and camera operator, and also offer aerial cinematography with the Inspire 3 8K cinema drone, providing a complete visual solution for productions filming in New Zealand and abroad.

With over 16 years’ experience in the screen industry, I specialise in cinematic storytelling that combines strong visual craft with technical precision. My work spans feature documentaries, broadcast television, branded content, and streaming productions, with a focus on creating authentic, visually compelling imagery that connects with global audiences.

I’ve worked extensively with international crews and productions filming in New Zealand, and understand the expectations of US and UK production companies working on location—clear communication, efficiency on set, and the ability to deliver high-end results in demanding environments.

My career has taken me across New Zealand, the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, and Asia, working across a wide range of genres including:

  • Documentary and factual television

  • Natural history and science

  • Feature and specialist documentaries

  • Commercial and branded content

I’ve contributed to productions for major studios, broadcasters, and streaming platforms including Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, Discovery, Disney, TVNZ, and Netflix.

Whether working as a Director of Photography, camera operator, or aerial cinematographer, I bring a collaborative, solutions-focused approach to every project, with a strong emphasis on visual storytelling, adaptability, and production-ready execution.

If you’re looking for a Director of Photography in New Zealand, or an experienced DOP for international productions filming in NZ, I’m available to collaborate across projects of all scales.

Ngā mihi nui,
Steve Unwin
